Published in the USA in 1884 and set about 50 years prior, Adventures of "Huckleberry Finn" describes the travels of a boy (Huck) and an escaped slave (Jim) as they make their way down the Mississippi river in Southeast United States. The attitudes that characterize America today are in large part either nostalgia for or a reaction against the attitudes described in this book. Although the language of the original English text is “rough” compared to the English spoken by most Americans today, the vocabulary is rich with commonly spoken, but not commonly written terms.
